How To Measure Your Window For Shutters in Hartford

October 04, 2017

Plantation shutters in Hartford are typically priced on a square foot basis, so to get an approximate measurement for a price estimate, simply measure your window width and length, to the nearest eighth of an inch.

For Hartford residents who are a little more hands-on, we’ll show you the simplest way to measure your windows for plantation shutters.

How to Measure Square & Rectangular Windows for Shutters

Typical square windows sound like the easiest kind of windows to measure – and they are, at least compared to other uniquely shaped windows. But you still have an entire process that goes into getting accurate measurements. Here’s how to do it.

The Tools That You Need:

  • Metal tape measure

  • Pencil and paper

Starting off, measure the width (the left-to-right distance). Measure across in three separate places: near the exact center, close to the top, and close to the bottom of the pane. Write down each one, rounding to the nearest eighth of an inch. After that, measure the length (vertical) – take three measurements, one in the middle, and one near the left and right edges of the window as shown in the diagram below.

The reason you need to measure in three spots each direction is because no window is an absolutely perfect rectangle. And because of the different types of shutter mounts different windows need, you may need to get either the smallest measurement (for an inside mount), or the longest measurement (outside mount). Getting measurements in multiple places helps make sure your bases are covered.

Measuring Non-rectangular Windows for Shutters

Windows that aren’t rectangular are the windows that can present a challenge to measure. Just as there’s no perfect square window, there’s also never a perfect arch or octagonal window – which means that even if you get perfect measurements, you could still have issues. If you want the best results, get measurements taken by a professional (which our team is happy to provide for no cost). Other than that, here’s how to measure most types of specialty windows for shutters.

How to Measure Arched and Semicircle Windows

Start by measuring the width of the window at the flat bottom. Measuring only the window opening, mark down to the nearest eighth of an inch the width of the arch. For the length, locate the midpoint of the window by dividing the width distance in half, then measure to the end of the rounded part of the window from the point you found. Again, record to the closest eighth of an inch.

How to Measure Elongated Arch Windows for Shutters

Elongated arch windows look like a cross between a square window and a circular window, with a wide, flat bottom and vertical “legs,” but with rounded corners at the top and a higher arch. So attack it like that: an arch and a square mashed together. Measure the width as you would any other arched window, then take a measurement of the height of the legs (the straight vertical parts before the window curves). Last, find the maximum height of the window from the center, minus the leg height. Again, write down every measurement to the nearest eighth of an inch.

Measuring Circular & Octagonal Windows

Circular and octagonal windows are some of the hardest to find measurements, because there are so many small features that can change the dimensions of the shutters your window may need. You might want to leave these more difficult ones to a professional.
